If you’re seeking to increase your skill set and enhance your employment options, then a telehandler ticket could be for you.
Used in a variety of job roles across the construction, mining, transport, logistics, gas and oil sectors, operating a telescopic handler is a highly sought-after ability.
Read on to find out everything you need to know about our telehandler courses and where they could take you.
What is a Telehandler?
The term ‘telehandler’ is an abbreviation for telescopic handler or telescopic materials handle. This versatile machine is commonly used in construction and agriculture to lift and place various materials. A hybrid between a forklift and a crane, telehandlers can operate and move loads in areas which traditional forklifts can’t access.
All telehandler units are equipped with a telescopic boom that can be fitted with a wide range of other attachments, such as winches, lifting jibs, and excavation buckets, making them ideal for use in a variety of jobs.
Ultimately, having a telehandler on-site removes the strain from complicated moving and lifting. Whether you’re transporting hay bales on a farm or moving heavy loads in the civil industry, a skilled telehandler operator eliminates the need for manual lifting, enhancing the safety of any site.
What are the Benefits of Using a Telehandler?
Obtaining a telehandler licence enables you to perform a variety of tasks. Indeed, a telescopic handler is often the first piece of equipment to arrive on site, so it is deemed vital to many operations.
Let’s look at some of the key reasons why a telehandler ticket could open new doors for you:
Versatile Usage
As we’ve already mentioned, telehandlers are incredibly versatile in their manoeuvrability and array of attachments. They can be used for heavy lifting, accessing hard-to-reach places, scooping and loading goods, and clearing debris.
Work in Multiple Industries
This versatility isn’t just confined to the unit itself. Because telehandlers have such far-reaching capabilities, they present invaluable uses to various sectors. From infrastructure and mining to agriculture to use in the gas and oil industry, holding a telehandler licence presents plenty of career opportunities.
Clean & Safe Working
One common use of a telescopic materials handler is cleaning up worksites. Alongside its ability to transport and lift heavy loads, having a telehandler on site helps to protect the workforce and maintain a clean, accessible, safe environment.
What is the Difference Between a Telehandler and a Forklift?
While there are similarities between forklifts and telehandlers, there are a few key distinctions.
Both machines feature booms to move loads; however, a forklift can only use forks for transference, while telehandlers can be fitted with an array of different attachments. Their range of movement is also greater. Forklifts can only move loads up and down, but a telehandler can also operate back and forth as well as diagonally—ideal for accessing tight or hard-to-reach spaces.
Unlike forklifts, telehandlers can also function as cranes to lift heavy or cumbersome loads to heights that forklifts cannot reach. Most forklift licence holders are unfamiliar with these different capabilities, so a standalone telehandler ticket is required.
What Ticket Do You Need to Operate a Telehandler?
In Australia, you must hold a specific High Risk Work Licence to obtain a telehandler ticket. We provide fully-accredited telehandler training at KI Training & Assessing through the RIIHAN309F – Conduct telescopic materials handler operations module. Upon completing the telehandler course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for operating a standard telescopic handler and its attachments.
However, please note that this telehandler ticket does not cover the operation of a slewing telehandler or crane jib attachments with a capacity over 3 tonnes. You will need to obtain a C2 licence for slewing telehandlers and a CN or above for crane attachments over 3 tonnes.
